The Legacy Project

Water for every
community

A legacy Achi’s grandchildren will still use: pipe-borne water across all twelve communities, started by this festival.

Recommended to the Central Planning Committee; decision pending

How we choose

The legacy test

Every option put to the Central Planning Committee had to pass three questions.

Will Achi’s grandchildren still use it?

A legacy lasts thirty years or more, and is built to be maintained.

Does it improve ordinary daily life?

It should help every household, not only on festival day.

Would it look at home in a well-run small town?

The standard is the everyday amenities a visitor expects in towns like Livingston in Scotland or Fulshear in Texas: clean water, working health care, good schools, safe lit streets and civic spaces.

The recommendation

The Achi Water Grid

Clean water is the first thing a town needs and the hardest thing for a family to provide alone. The Water Grid gives Achi a single, community-owned water system:

  • A hilltop scheme in each community. Each of the twelve picks its highest point for a borehole, a solar pump and storage tanks. Gravity does the rest.
  • Trunk mains along the major roads. Pipes of 6 to 10 inches follow the main roads through Achi.
  • Connections to every hamlet. Hamlets connect to the mains and extend the pipe to homes.
  • An Achi Water Board. A board run by the community operates the grid, collects modest fees and keeps it working.

The aim is for Achi to be the first town in the South-East with pipe-borne water all around.

How the first phase is paid for

The festival’s ₦800 million legacy fund launches the grid. The State and development partners are asked to match it to complete the other communities. The full grid is estimated at about ₦10.8 billion (a range of ₦7.5 to ₦14 billion), built in stages to 2030.

Major gifts

Name a cluster of water kiosks

A gift of ₦5 million names a cluster of water kiosks on the grid, in your name, your family’s or a loved one’s.

We are looking for 120 major givers. Your name stays on the kiosks for as long as they serve Achi.

Where ₦1 billion goes

Finance Sub-Committee budget₦30m

Every Naira raised above ₦1 billion, up to ₦148 million, goes to the Achi Education Foundation.
